How to create a winning portfolio

We have received countless portfolios. Some are good ones and some are, let’s just say it, common. If your work still has not got the attention that it was supposed to get, your portfolio may be leaning on the common field. It hurts to tell the truth but you’ll thank us later!

This portfolio? Her portfolio? Or ‘Oh that cool portfolio from Greg last week!’?

What makes it different is to know what pitfalls to avoid, and go through few winning tips from us! If you’re unsure, take a picture of your current portfolio and after you’re done refurbishing, take another picture and reward yourself!

So, how do you create a portfolio? Not just any portfolio but an outstanding one among the others? Here are some heads up to help you land on that dream job!

Be Selective
You are in charge to show them what you have got. That means the opportunity is in your hands! If you want your portfolio to be bullet-proof, you must be a very tough editor on yourself. Choose the works that show your talent wisely. For the love of universe, don’t put everything in! You’ll never know when some artwork will deteriorate the impression of the really good ones.

Only show your best work that works. Because at the end of the day, it’s what the employer wants to know.

Prepare your portfolio earlier
As common as it sound, you’ll be thankful later! Planning ahead can help you find and fix mistakes before anyone else sees them; and by anyone here, we meant your employer. Picture this; you show up for an interview and present your portfolio, and all you get is that peculiar expression on the manager’s face which chills your spine. That might’ve made you lost half the battle.

Hence, way before you start looking for a job, plan your portfolio and select which artwork to put in. This also ensures that you don’t rush a work just so it can end up in your portfolio. We all know how those work ends up looking, don’t we?

Make your portfolio uniquely you
Sometimes we can’t help but to take notice of really creative, funny or unique ideas. During the planning phase, you’d be mostly on the Internet, browsing other examples of great portfolios. No doubt they do inject some really good insights for your execution later on. But at the end of the day, we are interested in knowing You and Your portfolio. Give yourself some space and try to think of what defines you and your style of work, and what makes you different from others.

Be unique and keep in mind not to try too hard for you want other people to get your message, too!

Creative Attack: Art Camp 2013

Just when you thought your Saturday would be easy, our Art Camp 2013 strived to make it better!

If you heard it earlier that this year’s Art Camp was far more challenging yet with added fun and attractive prizes, you are right!

The registration started at 8:30am, but participants can be sighted before 8:00am!

In contrary to popular beliefs, no one likes to be up on an early Saturday morning. However, these creative campers were excited and all we can see is glees on their faces! How could they not be up when greeted by friendly and charming emcee, Laureen Quah? It started off with some fun ice-breaking games by Paul Seah before they were grouped into a team of fives.

Time to break the social barrier, ay?

Different teams were to create different characters. Each group came out with a theme and the members were to create their very own unique characters and give it an identity. It seemed so easy but no!

Briefing by Jason Chuah

The first session, Skeleton Moments, require participants to create a ‘backbone’ structure as a base before proceeding to the next step. In this session, it was conducted by Digital 3D Animation Department and guided by the student helpers. Head of Department, Jason Chuah briefed the participants before they begin as it requires precise measuring and cutting.

Cutting board requires attention. Helpers and lecturers were there to give a hand.

Skeleton done!

Next up, off to the Fashion Department for Clothing Moments! Participants were greeted by friendly fashion lecturer, Jonathan Penn and helpers! This time, they were to create an outfit to match their characters. They can add some props or accessories for that touch of glamour. We sure gave them a real-fashion designing experience! Just look what they've made; from plain white skeleton to runway-ready!

Having fun at the fashion department

Study Trip To Tokyo, Japan

Just like what Lily Allen said Who’d Have Known, we could never put this into words. Regardless of that, we will still try because we need to get the excitement out of our system!

Weeks ago, Equator Academy of Art students have been selected to represent Malaysia for a study trip to Tokyo, Japan! Now, we know how big Japan is for the art-oriented, right? Not only that but this group of talented students are from our Digital 3D Animation Department.

3D Animation? Japan? Anime artists? Contain ourselves we cannot!

If you haven’t seen the pictures in our Facebook, check it out here!

Have you watch Pom Poko, My Neighbour Totoro, or Princess Mononoke? Then you should know that these globally-renowned works are done by genius minds from Ghibli Studio. Our favourite is Spirited Away of course. But really, how cool is it when you get to step in Ghibli Museum?

Madhouse is not a new name to us too. You may not know of the production company, but we’re sure you’ve heard of or even watched Beyblade, Chobits, Tokyo Babylon and many more!

Familiar with the name Square Enix? How about Final Fantasy? Nuff said.

What a great opportunity and eye-opening experience for these young and talented minds!

Sharing some Japanese love till we see you in the next blog post! Itada ikimasu!

Old Folks’ Photography Contest

You might wonder what is with the ‘Old Folks’ about. Well, let us tell you!

It is a contest organized by the Interior Design and Architecture students of Equator Academy. Unlike the common photography contest where we study on skills and artistic values, this is one step further.

The main aim of this photography contest is to inspire the young people to care for the elderly with compassion and to take up responsibility as a way of social contribution.

Scroll down to see some of the participant's artwork.

Convocation 2013 @ Traders Hotel Penang

It was a typical Sunday, but not for us in Equator Academy. It’s the day where we celebrate students’ graduation and their achievements. Seriously, how quick does time zaps?

The convocation was held at Traders Hotel with a total of 224 students graduating in various disciplines and programmes. There were 11 students who received awards for eminent categories namely ‘The Best Students’, ‘Outstanding Students’, ‘The Most Promising Young Designers/Animators’ and ‘The Best Performing Awards’.

We could still remember how busy the Pinang Ballroom was on that morning; students came all dressed up, taking pictures, parents waiting eagerly, gifts and flower bouquets everywhere. It was worth the effort after seeing how excited these students were.

Check out some of the pictures below.

The dream of wearing a graduation robe; checked.
